Whether you struggle with substance or you’re trying to help someone you love, there are a variety of treatment programs available to you. Addiction is a disease, and in most cases, it’s an incredible challenge to overcome with the experience and guidance of trained professionals. A variety of complex complications — including co-occurring mental health disorders — can make it difficult to know which different recovery programs you should pursue. Below, you’ll find more information about the various resources available to you and how they can help you conquer your addiction.

Inpatient Recovery Programs

Inpatient treatment involves a variety of different recovery programs. These treatments are designed to help individuals who struggle with severe substance abuse or mental health problems. They offer an intense form of supervised treatment, during which you’ll receive round-the-clock medical supervision by a highly trained healthcare staff.

In any inpatient recovery program, you’ll spend the night in the treatment facility for ongoing monitoring. During the day, you’ll work through addiction treatment and mental health counseling. The goal of inpatient recovery is to provide quick-access medical and psychological resources to help you achieve long-term sobriety success.

Depending on the nature of your substance abuse disorder, you’ll undergo a professional diagnosis, complete with a psychiatric exam. You may also receive medication-assisted therapy to help you manage your detox symptoms. If you suffer from a co-occurring mental health disorder, you’ll receive comprehensive treatment for that as well.

Support groups may also comprise a portion of your treatment in inpatient recovery. Finally, aftercare therapy planning will prioritize ongoing support to help you successfully maintain long-term recovery. Ultimately, the length of your inpatient stay depends on several factors. These include the scope of your substance abuse disease and, in some cases, your overall response to treatment.

Outpatient Recovery Programs

There are typically two different recovery program options for clients who plan to undergo outpatient recovery. The first, standard outpatient treatment, provides ongoing counseling and resources to help you reach a successful recovery. However, it does not involve intense supervision by trained medical and psychological staff.

The second form of outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient therapy, is referred to as day therapy. In day therapy, individuals spend a portion of their day under medical supervision, typically up to 20 hours a week. However, day treatment clients do not spend the night at the treatment facility. As well, group counseling is often a major component of outpatient therapy. Research has demonstrated that when combined, individualized and group therapy offers you the best chance at long-term recovery.

12-Step Support Groups

Although professional guidance and counseling are critical components of substance abuse treatment, those who suffer from addiction or mental health diseases require ongoing support. 12-step support groups are designed to offer that support while giving you the resources and guidance you need to maintain your sobriety.

In this form of group therapy, you’ll meet with several people who previously struggled with drug or alcohol abuse. As a team, you’ll learn more about the principles of a successful recovery and long-term maintenance. Ultimately, you’ll also learn to implement those practices in your daily life. Most 12-step programs incorporate faith-based principles into their teachings.

Non-12-Step Support

If you’re looking for different recovery programs for ongoing support without the faith-based nature of traditional support groups, there are several non-12-step programs available to you.

Typically, these programs require far less group sharing during discussion. This practice may be beneficial for more introverted individuals or those who don’t feel comfortable publicly sharing sensitive information. A family therapy program is an important form of non-12-step support for anyone affected by a loved one’s drug or alcohol abuse.
