Overcoming addiction is a lifelong journey. Each day offers a new opportunity to make better choices, learn about past behaviors, and help others on their journey. Some people seem to move forward more quickly during recovery while others lag more slowly. However, no matter what your speed is overcoming addiction, everyone benefits from a supportive recovery program. That’s why Celebrate Recovery meetings are such a fantastic way to continue the journey to healing and hope. Similar to the famous 12 step program, people will adapt well to its structure.

What are Celebrate Recovery Meetings?

A Celebrate Recovery meeting is a time when people who are working on overcoming addiction gather together in a group setting to gain strength from one another. The Celebrate Recovery model was initiated in 1991 at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California. It was a collaborative effort between John Baker and the infamous Pastor Rick Warren. The idea behind Celebrate Recovery was to provide recovering substance abusers with a Christian rehab center that would enhance their journey to healing.

The Celebrate Recovery meetings were very popular when they started in 1991, so the idea was spread to other locations. According to the Celebrate Recovery website, the program is now widespread in “recovery houses, rescue missions, universities, and prisons around the world.” This transformational program has affected millions of lives.

Some of the program modules that they have initiated are:

  • Step Studies

Group of people hugging all together during a therapy session in support meeting, copy space

  • The Journey Begins
  • The Journey Continues

What is a Celebrate Recovery Meeting Like?

Although every location will have its own style or way of doing things, there are some commonalities of the recovery meetings. At a celebrate recovery meetings in Houston, you may see two components. There is a large group meeting and an open share small group meeting.

During the large group meeting, participants partake in a time of thankfulness and learning. There is often singing, praise, prayer, and a time for learning during the large group meeting.

The open share small group meeting is a more intimate setting with people grouped together by either situation or gender etc. This session provides a time for you to open up about whatever is on your heart and mind. This is your safe place to gain help or to help others with your words of wisdom. If you are new to the group, there is a special class for newcomers that allows you to get acclimated to the way the groups work.

Finally, after attending for a period of time, you may join one of the studies mentioned above (step study, the journey begins, or the journey continues). These sessions help you dig down into your past behavior to discover the driving factors that led to drug addiction.
