12 StepAbout UsProgramsgroup session talks about what are the 12 Steps of AA

People who struggle with alcohol addiction have many options for treatment, including 12-step rehab. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has brought 12-step treatment into the limelight. However, not everyone knows the 12 Steps of AA. Understanding these 12 Steps can clarify why so many rehab centers also offer 12 step addiction treatment options.

The 12 Steps of AA

Knowing what are the 12 Steps of AA can help people determine if it’s the right program for them. Many rehab centers have slightly different variations of 12-step programs. In general, though, the 12 Steps are a set of guidelines that people follow to achieve recovery. These include:

  1. Admitting that they’re powerless against addiction
  2. Believing in a higher power that can restore their sanity and strength
  3. Making the choice to turn their lives over to this higher power
  4. Taking an accurate and truthful moral inventory
  5. Admitting their wrongdoings to themselves, others and their higher power
  6. Opening themselves to their higher power to remove their faults
  7. Asking the higher power to remove these shortcomings
  8. Making an accurate list of all the people who they’ve wronged
  9. Making amends for these wrongdoings
  10. Continuing with the personal inventory and fixing any other wrongdoings
  11. Using meditation or prayer to connect with a higher power and gain knowledge
  12. Using these steps to achieve a spiritual awakening

Rehab centers that offer 12-step rehab typically use some form of the 12 Steps of AA. While they will differ slightly according to the specific addiction, the core elements remain.

How Well Do the 12 Steps Work?

Learning what are the 12 Steps of AA only creates half of the picture. After all, people don’t always care about each specific step. Instead, they want to know if the 12 Steps of AA actually work.

Data from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) shows that 12-step rehab is successful more often than non-12-step rehab. In fact, the success rate for 12-step rehab was nearly twice as high compared to non-12-step rehab.

Also, AA 12 Step addiction treatment was slightly more successful than generic 12-step programs. Keep in mind that this data includes people who had no other form of aftercare following rehab.

In either case, research shows that any form of treatment is better than not receiving treatment at all. Even if people don’t think that 12-step rehab is right for them, they still need treatment of some kind.
